4th of July Pet Safety

Unfortunately, not all pets are calm when it comes to fireworks and all the 4th of July celebrations. As a matter of fact, shelters are stuffed this time of year due to fireworks scaring off pets. Below are some ways you can ensure your pet is safe through the duration of the firework season.

  • Make sure your pets stay inside your home! This is especially true during the evening and night time hours when most fireworks will be set off. This includes locking all means of escape such as doggie doors.
  • Help distract them by playing with them and keeping them busy with games and tasks.
  • Most importantly, be sure to equip your pet with a proper pet identification e.g. microchip or collar with tags.
  • Turn on the TV or Radio to help drown out the sound outside.

So what do you do if you find someone else’s furry companion? If the pet is willing, let the pet come to you and check its collar for contact information. Be sure to use common sense and safety when using this approach. You can contact an animal shelter, or you can harbor your new furry friend until you see active action on the owner’s part to find their pet. Many cities and communities have “Lost Pets” pages on social media or apps like Nextdoor. These are good places to start.

Some extra measures to ensure a smoother evening for your pet are…

  • Use lavender essential oil to help calm your pet.
  • Make sure they have plenty of food and water in their safe place.
  • Take your dog out for exercise before the fireworks start.

We love our furry companions and want to keep them safe at all times! We hope these tips will help your pet’s 4th of July go as smoothly as possible!
