Patoka Lake Clean Up

Patoka Lake Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, August 22 from 8:00 –11:00a.m. in a stash the trash and dash style.  We need your help to protect this drinking water source and wildlife habitat area!  Due to Covid-19 and the practice of social distancing,participants can meet an event coordinator at any of the following boat ramps to register:

  • Painter’s Creek, Osborn, South Lick Fork, Lick Fork, Newton Stewart or South Ramp.
  • Quick Registration is from 8:00 – 9:30a.m.  Trash pickup will take place from 8:00a.m. – 11a.m.
  • Come by kayak, boat or car!  Increased visitation this summer,brought an increase in trash buildup.  While our staff and volunteers work daily to clear the debris, there is still pounds of trash littering the shoreline.

Trash bags and gloves will be provided.  Plan to wear close-toed walking shoes, bug spray and bring long pants. Participants will be placed in locations based on family groups. The event will be held in a stash the trash and dash style where trash bags will be left at the boat ramp and along highways for trucks to pick up.  Once you have collected in your area,you are free to head home.  Due to Covid-19 there will be no formal meal or prize giveaways but the lake needs you now more than ever!  We send a huge thank you to all of our past volunteers and extend our appreciation in advance to all those who will join us in 2020!

Unsolicited Seeds from China

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is aware that people across the country have received unsolicited packages of seed from China in recent days, which they did not order. APHIS is working closely with the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection and State departments of agriculture to prevent the unlawful entry of prohibited seeds and protect U.S. agriculture from invasive pests and noxious weeds.

Please hold onto the seeds and packaging, including the mailing label. Do not plant seeds from unknown origins.  Do not burn them to dispose of them.

In Indiana, the Office of the Indiana State Chemist (OISC) is working with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)to address this issue.  They are treating the packages as potentially harmful and they are requesting that any seeds received to be sent to the state lab for identification and evaluation.

If you become aware of recipients of unsolicited seed, please encourage them to do the following:

*       If they are sealed, do not open

*       Do not plant them

*       If they are opened, keep them in an air-tight container

*       Do not handle them

*       Mail directly to:

                                ATTN:  Don Robison

                                Office of Indiana State Chemist

                                175 S. University St.

                                West Lafayette, IN 47907-2063

*       LABEL:  “Foreign Seed for ID” on the package.

During these tough times – please consider doing some of the following to help support the local economy:

1.       Purchase a gift card to use at a later date. Or give as a gift now! This will help the business with cash flow.

2.       Pick a different business or organization each day and leave them a positive comment on facebook or another form of social media.,

3.      Engage online with your favorite business – share & comment on their postings.

4.      If you have a membership or subscription – – try to continue paying, if you can.

5.      Order takeout or delivery and leave a tip, if you have the means.

6.      Ask a business owner how you can help.  This kind gesture can go a long way.Reach out to businesses to see how you can help them now or later.

7.      Have a local restaurant deliver to the hospital, police, fire departments…But please check with the service provider first to see if they can accept this kindness.

8.      Check in on your neighbors to make sure they are doing all right. Call your family and friends to make sure they are ok.

9.      Social Distancing does not mean social isolation. Bring your neighbor supplies or food if they need it.Kindness is important!

10.      And please – – if you are sick – – stay home!

11.      AND MAKE SURE TO WEAR YOUR MASK – – THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!!
