5 Places to Give Back This Holiday Season

This time of year, we all get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. In between the twinkling lights, Christmas decorations and shopping for gifts, we sometimes forget about what matters most. There are thousands of people in our area that need help, not just throughout the holidays. We thought it would be helpful to highlight some fantastic organizations that make it their mission to help those in need, especially around the holidays. Each of them offer volunteer opportunities and several other options on how you can help!

Tri-State Food Bank

The Tri-State Food Bank is a tremendous organization that has a profound impact on our area. They collect donated, usable food, and disperse it to non-profit organizations in 33 counties around the tri-state. Their efforts help organizations such as soup kitchens, day care programs, summer feeding sites, emergency relief programs and much more. They are always looking for volunteers to help! Evansville Rescue Mission

The Evansville Rescue Mission provides a variety of services to help those in need. Perhaps their largest, most well-known service is their Residence Center which provides roughly 259,000 meals and 56,000 nights of safe shelter, each year. Along with food and shelter, the Evansville Rescue Mission also provides clothing distribution, mentoring, summer camp, and thrift stores. Follow the link here to see how you can help!

United Caring Services

The United Caring Services offers the only Day Shelter (drop in center) services in Evansville that offers 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. They typically serve more than 350 hot meals a day! Their services are offered to elderly, disabled, near homeless and homeless individuals. Aside from food, they also offer safe places for individuals to stay whether it’s short term or long term. Potter’s Wheel

The Potter’s Wheel is an inner city organization that focuses on helping people get immediate needs and educate people to give them the skills necessary to help themselves. They offer everything from Food Baskets, clothing bank, GED classes, Bible study, and more! Some of their immediate needs are food, clothing, books, and more importantly, your time. Patchwork Central

Patchwork Central serves individuals and families with unique arts and enrichment programs. Similar to other non-profits on this list, Patchwork offers a food pantry, which served 1885 individuals, 904 households and 19.5 tons of food last year alone. What sets Patchwork apart from the others is their Arts & Smarts, Gardens and Bike Shop programs. The Arts & Smarts program offers creative activities for children which is vital in growth and development. They also have urban garden spaces that act as educational tools for children. And, perhaps the most overlooked program, the Bike shop. Here, they re-condition bicycles and provide them to individuals that need transportation.
